The marine ship's engine burns a lot of fuel every day to propel ships that are loaded in a massive manner. They are known to use the oils o low-grade to lower the operating costs of the ship as its price represents about 30-50% of total operating ship costs.

Lubricant functions

  • Separate the contact surfaces entirely, which will reduce the dynamic and static friction to less value possible to keep it away from wear and tear.

Properties of lubricating oil of crankcase

  • Flashpoints need to be high
  • Viscosity needs to be suited for the purpose
  • Oxidation stability needs to be high
  • Viscosity index must be high
  • The total basic and acid number of TDN needs to suit the purpose
  • Residues of carbon need to be low
  • Detergency is used to clean
  • Pour points needs to be low
  • Dispersancy needs to be used to facilitate purification


How viscosity can be defined?

It is considered as the internal resistance used to measure the flow between liquid layers. The viscosity of the oil reduces when the temperature starts to increase and vice versa. For the cylindrical oil, viscosity needs to be 12.5 – 22 Cst while for the crankcase lube oil, viscosity needs to be 140 to 250 Redwood No-1 seconds 60-degree Celsius.

How the viscosity index can be defined?

It is considered to be the change in the rate of the viscosity oil with respect to the temperature change. The oil that comes with less viscosity index has a lot greater change with the temperature change. The index of minerals tends to be higher, which is about 115 and this might get increased to 165 by adding some special additions.
